At DoubleBlind, we’ve taught thousands of people around the world how to grow mushrooms at-home. Now, we’re empowering you to go deep into the mushroom growing process. This course is specially designed for folks who have tried growing mushrooms before (with our 101 course or on their own)—and newbies who are ready to dive straight into the mycology deep end. You'll learn how to create your own library of mushroom genetics so that you never have to rely on a spore supplier again. (There’s nothing worse than waiting for a syringe in the mail only to find out it’s contaminated!)

Written and taught by mycologists Dr. K Mandrake of The Psilocybin Mushroom Bible, Darren Springer, and Caine Barlow, this course will cover different types of grain spawn, the pros and cons of varying bulk substrates, how to build several kinds of fruiting chambers, how to take spore prints, and much more. Whether you’re a mushroom nerd—or just know the basics, this course will not only leave you with bigger and better yields—it will leave you feeling like you truly understand the mushroom growing process.

Why this class?

We're Trusted
At DoubleBlind, we've taught thousands of people how to successfully grow mushrooms right at home. It's been a humbling and beautiful journey.

One-on-One Support
Unlike with online forums like Reddit, with our course, you get access to leading mycology teachers who will support you every step of the way, by looking at photos of your grow, answering your questions, helping you troubleshoot, and just cheering you on. Our team includes three teachers and five TAs who are available Monday through Friday in our private community forum.

Take Control of Your Supply
In our beginners mushroom course, we teach you how to grow mushrooms in nine weeks with a spore syringe. In this course, we'll teach you how to do liquid culture and make agar plates. You'll never need to buy spores from an online retailer again—and you'll have an infinite supply of shrooms for yourself, friends, and family. Plus, your chances of contamination (the biggest reason people fail at growing) go way down.

Save Time
When growing for the first time, you can waste a lot of time and resources trying to get it right. Armed with this intermediate knowledge, you'll be better at spotting and managing contamination early so your chances of success go up.

Save Money
Grow more mushies, for less money. Once you know these more intermediate teks, you'll be able to get a lot more bang for your buck.

Deepen Your Relationship with Mushrooms
There's nothing more beautiful than connecting with what you put in your own body. This course will give you a deeper understanding of how mycelium grow and why people choose varying teks. You won't just be following steps, but be making your own choices about how to optimize your set up.

Grow Many Kinds of Mushrooms
Not all mushrooms grow the same way. In this course, we'll empower you to move beyond shrooms that grow on rice, to all kinds of species including wood-loving ones like Lion's Mane and Reishi that are incredible for your health and cooking.

Join the Grow Your Own Movement
There’s a movement on the rise. People are taking control of their wellness. Join us and become a part of it.

Support Independent Journalism
The proceeds from this course fund DoubleBlind’s journalism, to help us pay the writers, photographers, and artists who put our magazine together.

  • What you'll learn:

This expert-curated course empowers you to take your mushroom growing to the next level, from grain substrates and fruiting chambers to making agar plates.

Episode 1: Liquid Culture (with Caine Barlow)
Liquid Culture, or LC, is a cheaper and faster way to grow mushrooms than spore syringes. Plus, it's an easy way to introduce mycelium to grain in bulkit makes for great storage of fungi cultures, and it allows you to share or trade mycelium with friends and family. In this episode, you'll learn how to prepare liquid culture, how to make a magnetic stirrer, how to make airport lids, care and maintenance of your LC, and more.

Episode 2: Grain Spawn (with Caine Barlow)
Grain spawn for mycologists is kind of like meatballs for grandmas. Everyone has a recipe—and there's a lot of strong feelings about the best one. But what actually are the best ingredients for growing your mushrooms? In this episode, we don't tell you: we empower you to make your own choice and to play around until you find what works best. We cover rye berries, wheat berries, millet, sorghum, corn, wild bird seed, and wood chips (for wood-loving species). We also cover different kinds of spawn containers (glass jars vs. polypropylene bags), and how to take care of your grain spawn to avoid contamination and mold.

Episode 3: Fruiting Chambers (with Darren Springer)
Your fruiting chamber is your home for your mushrooms. Like grain spawns, there's many different kinds—and they all have pros and cons, depending on whether your priority is ease, cost, growing in bulk, or something else. In this episode, Darren Springer covers the difference between the shotgun fruiting chamber and the monotub, and how to make both. He also reviews Martha's Closet, a more advanced tek, and why you might opt for that once you graduate to the next level of growing.

Episode 4: Designing Bulk Substrates (with Darren Springer)
There's also many different recipes for bulk substrates—or the final medium (like soil) that your mushrooms grow in before they're ready for harvest. We always get a lot of questions about this step in our 101 course. Folks read online that it's good to add manure, coffee, and other ingredients. In this episode, we'll help you navigate the complicated world of substrate ingredients and brands including coir, manure (horse, cow, chicken and more), straw, and worm castings.

Episode 5: Spore Prints, Agar, and Maintaining Culture Libraries (with Dr. K Mandrake)
In the final episode, we’ll cover how to keep your mushroom cultures going for years to come. Although we’ve experimented with a variety of different species, we still have original culture lines from our first syringes over 10 years ago. Through making spore prints and cloning on agar, you can keep sources of spores available for whenever you need them, as well as isolate the genetics of interesting wild, store-bought, or home-grown species. You'll end the class knowing how to take a spore print, how to make a spore syringe, agar recipes and how to make plates, how to isolate clean healthy cultures (even when your spores might have contamination), how to clone mushrooms to preserve genetics indefinitely, and tips for building a culture library, including long-term storage techniques.
